Hip-Hop On The Ave 5

December 14th, 2012 by Nico Miatello

Brother’s Grim are hosting the 5th annual Hip Hop on the Ave at Avenue theatre. The show features more than 25 local artists and entertainers in support of Santa’s Anonymous. If you’re looking to support Edmonton’s less fortunate youth or just want to check out wicked local show, come on down to Avenue Theatre Dec 27th.

To get into the event all you have to do is bring one unwrapped toy as a Christmas present, the toy will then be taken into Santa’s Anonymous and then donate to one child who is going through a rough time. A small price to pay to put a smile on a kid’s face!.

The acts of the evening will include; The Brothers Grim (Event hosts), Toxsic, The BBM Dancecrew, Doomsquad, T.O.A, Rellik, Mitchell Lawler and many more.

Lockout Blues

November 21st, 2012 by Nico Miatello

With Christmas quickly approaching there is one thing likely on the wish lists of many fans within our city, they want hockey back. Sure we have the young gun Oil Kings to watch, or fans could always catch an AHL game seeing the Barons show what they can do against kids their age, and you could always watch the Oilers number one pick Nail Yakupov tear up the KHL like a young Alex Ovechkin. But nothing can truly compare to the intensity of watching the Oil get into the thick of things in the western conference, and show us whether or not it’s the year the kids have the coming out party we have all been waiting for.

Throughout the years I would always pick up the newest EA game and try to play through day to day with the Oilers, hoping that maybe the 82-0 season I would pick up on easy mode would somehow rub off on the boys in blue. It might not have always been the case, but needless to say I will not have the chance this year. Nor will I get the chance to celebrate being 18 by dropping into Hudsons for a beer and gleefully hug someone I don’t know when Eberle gets his hat trick goal. I’m sure everyone remembers the joy from the Stanley cup run a few years back. The happiness that came across the city, you couldn’t walk down Whyte without getting a high five slapped on your hand from a drunken patron. This year we have once again been robbed of such utter bliss by a couple big organizations who can’t decide who gets the next million dollars in their pocket.

The lockout really puts a damper on the community as a whole, even non-hockey fans are affected. It extends further than the close locale, schools can’t raffle off tickets to pay for graduations, small businesses can’t take potential partners to a sky-box to work out a deal. Within the city people are influenced by the Oilers, even if they are not fans. The team reflects on the city. Things like music, dance, and acting are all affected by this, when people hear that you are performing out of Edmonton, they know the city for one of two reasons, the mall or the team. It is such a part of who we are as a city. Most importantly parents can’t introduce their young ones to the game that defines this country. I personally had planned to take my three year old niece to her first game this year, much to the chagrin of my sister I was planning to make the young one into a little tomboy, but now I will not have that chance.

Maybe the NHL will accept the offer the PA is giving them today, so we can go back to having our city as a whole. But if not it looks like a few more months in the gutter, with only the wish of what could’ve been.

Kinesis is proud to host Their second annual Edmonton Choreographers Ball on August 29, 2012 once again in proud support of the Canadian Cancer Society!

Kinesis is the first non-competitive local choreographers ball event which offers a myriad of styles (i.e. contemporary, urban, tap, hip-hop) on stage. We hope to inspire the choreographers and audience to further their own dance vocabulary in different schools of movement.

Our very own Sarah Dharshi is helping organize the event and we are proud to help sponsor this wonderful cause. Our Fall Line will be available to purchase at Kinesis before we even release it to the public! And of course, we’ll be donating a portion of proceeds to the cause.

Summer 2012 Look Book

June 14th, 2012 by Wade Tompkins

As many of you know we’ve dropped our early Summer 2012 Line.  We’ve been working on it for many months, redeveloping our processes and products.  It’s been long, it’s been hard but it’s totally been worth it.

When we first started out designing this summer’s style we were also right in the middle of a bunch of collabs with various artists and entertainers. The Brother’s Grim were talking to us about their merch and bumping ideas around about Etown’s hip hop scene and EDM Urban Showcase was nearing launch. A lot of what Grim wanted to convey rubbed off on us. We related to their pride for the 118 ave neighbourhood. Just as 118 ave has been there for them, Edmonton has really come through for us.

So we put out City in Words. It’s a subtle message. You can’t really see the detail when you first look at it. But when you lean in you see that detail pop. The throw backs to EDM tradition like “99” or the old cap ex name “Klondike Days”. You keep going though and see shout outs to our generation, like “JoThrillz” or “Oil Kings”.

A few people have asked me why we’re dropping sweaters and crewnecks for a summer line. Summers in Canada can get pretty hot, I totally get that, but I can’t remember a summer I didn’t need a sweater. In May you get a lot of rainy days. In June the nights still drop down to single digits. July, you don’t need ‘em unless you’re hiking and camping the rockies. August mornings get crisp and September’s a mix! And so, for our cool rainy days and summer nights, you have the made in Canada, Flavor Crew neck and Melange Sweater :)

Now we love representing our roots in E-town, but we go deeper than that. For me, Wetaskiwin and Vancouver will also be home and Calgary the same for Ryder. We love you guys out there too and everyone else around the world! ;) So to continue with our theme of simplicity and elegance, while also giving all of our fans something to jump behind, we have our cursive T’s.

And of course, our very popular hand made bracelets are out. Extra special for this season is the Bad Bitch Mentality bracelet which is already getting a lot of attention!

We have a video look book in the works and some interesting “stills” to come. For now, check out the look book for Summer 2012. Thanks Everyone for your support. You keep us going!

Wow you scrolled down here? Well now you get to see a special shout out to this Expat from Germany. Apparently he was an aerospace engineer. He was ballin’ and had some sick style going on. Thanks for making my day old fella!
