Hip Hop in the Park

May 16th, 2012 by Wade Tompkins

At Flavor EDM, we are always striving to promote and support the local urban arts scene and with it being Hip Hop Appreciation Week, what better way to get involved then by attending Hip-Hop in The Park?  Hip Hop in the Park is a festival that’s been around for 5 years and embraces the 5 elements of hip-hop: graffiti, b-boying, MCing, DJing and knowledge.

This festival consists of an entire week’s worth of activities including the art and fashion show on Saturday that Flavor EDM attended, a b-boy jam, a town forum regarding hip-hop culture and a rap battle.  The upcoming events include a slam poetry battle, a turntable choir, a “compliments battle” in support of iHuman, and a club night all leading up to the main event on Saturday at Louise McKinney Park.  Saturday’s event consists of live graffiti art, workshops, DJs and performances by over 20 local rappers.  You can check out previously featured artists and friends of Flavor EDM like Brothers Grim, Locution Revolution, Jo Thrillz and Bad Bitch Mentality who are all performing on the mainstage.

The Edmonton hip-hop scene is definitely growing and urban culture is coming to the forefront of the local arts scene with the assistance of the community.  We couldn’t be more excited to attend this event and support all of the local talent, it’s not something you want to miss! For a full schedule, check out the festival’s facebook event and website.

Flavor Studios – Announcement!

May 10th, 2012 by Wade Tompkins

After 8 months of learning choreography, performing all over the city, rehearsing for hours on end and competing to the best of our ability, you’d think that the rest of the ladies of Bad Bitch Mentality and I would be looking forward to a couple dance-free months of relaxation.  When it comes to my girls, that’s certainly not the case.  We are going full-force this summer; not only in continuing to showcase and perform wherever we can but also planning for the upcoming season.  We will continue to rep female empowerment and Flavor EDM to the fullest in the 2012-2013 season, but we figured, “Why stop here?”  And this brings me to our big news…

Bad Bitch Mentality (in collaboration with Flavor EDM) is so excited to announce the establishment of 3 new competitive BBM teams for the coming season!  We will be holding auditions late August-early September for an intermediate all-female team (name TBA) , an advanced all-female team (BBM Varsity) and an all-male advanced team (Bad Bro Mentality) to compete under the newly-founded Flavor Studios alongside Bad Bitch Mentality. The location for Flavor Studios will be announced in the coming months alongside class scheduling and rates.

Our goal with Flavor Studios is to provide students with top-notch choreography, performance ability and most importantly, confidence.  We are looking for positive, passionate and sassy dancers who are willing to work hard and rep the BBM/Flavor family to the fullest! Be sure to “like” Bad Bitch Mentality on Facebook & follow us on Twitter for audition dates and details for the summer kick-off workshop we’re planning as well! To all my bad bitches, I can see your halo.

BBM Owns December

December 31st, 2011 by BBM

December is a month that brings a lot of panic and stress but ultimately serves as a reminder of what’s most important- family. I definitely consider my bad bitches my second family, and December 2011 surely brought the expected amount of panic with the crew performing in 2 back-to-back shows.

BBM’s first performance of the year and the first of these two shows was Santa’s Kidz (December 17th, 2011), which was a hip-hop variety show that raised money for 3rd Street Beat’s studio cruise trip this summer (Jackie, Emily, Sarah R, Tahnee and I are all 3SB students and will be travelling to Los Angeles to train and then will be performing on a cruise this summer with the studio). The show’s line-up included our friends from ADD, 3SB VIP, NXG Company, TOA, 3SGlee, Details, White Chocolate, Tier 1 and other great Edmonton talent as well.

Our first obstacle was choreographing a set with a relatable winter theme that stayed true to what BBM promotes and intends to inspire through our movement: female empowerment and the ability to embrace humor through performance. We decided on a goofy New Years themed set choreographed by Tahnee, Sarah, Kayla, Emily, Jackie and I and even though we didn’t hear our final spliced music until the morning of the show and finished up the choreography during intermission, we got amazing feedback on our performance and were told that we created an amazing on-stage party atmosphere while still showcasing our love of dance. It was also our first time rocking Flavor’s amazing BBM feature shirts and overall, we had an amazing time performing.

BBM’s second show was the Kore’s Winter Showcase (December 18th, 2011). This was a more casual show and was basically a giant show and tell for all the crews and Kore classes and it took place at the studio. We decided to showcase that morning and performed our set from the night before to a crazy crowd full of encouraging dancers. It provided a very special opportunity to share with our peers and to support all the other amazing crews in Edmonton who share the same passion and dreams as us. Now that December is over, BBM is hard at work creating a brand new set for competition season. In this set, you can expect swag, humor and a whole lot of sexy of course. ;) Our next show will be Too School for Cool (Feb4, 2012), a benefit concert that will provide school supplies from children in 3rd world countries, you can contact us at bbmdance@edmflavor.com for more details. “To all my bad bitches, I can see your halo.”

Flavor and Bad Bitch Mentality – The making of.

December 14th, 2011 by Wade Tompkins

Flavor does all kinds of collaborations and we’re always very excited to work with the talent Edmonton has to offer. Recently we did a photoshoot with Bad Bitch Mentality to prep them for the website profiles, apparel design and all kinds of promotions for the dance group.

Flavor has had a good history with Uryelle Dimailig. She’s done a ton of work for us in the past, everything from photos for promotion posters to T-shirt features. She does amazing work, especially in the fashion industry. She’s really progressed over the past couple of years and we’re looking forward to her next project with us!

I asked Uryelle how she keeps it fresh and unique every time she’s behind the camera,

“With dancers it’s pretty easy; give them a little music to dance to, crack some jokes to keep the energy up and their personalities just come out on their own”.

Isaac Varty had his first taste of the Edmonton fashion and entertainment industry with this collaboration and it certainly wasn’t an easy in. He had to deal with 11 dancers, 2 photographers, 2 make up artists and the Flavor crew. Did I mention none have experience in video? You wouldn’t be able to tell from the Collab Video, the shots come out natural yet stylish all thanks to Isaac.

“When working with cars you want the viewer to experience the feel, vibe, and emotion the car expresses. Following the cars body lines, the way it hugs the road, and the engine and exhaust audio. Those most important things to consider. When I film people I want the viewer to feel like they know something about the people after. The best way to capture this is; facial expressions, body language, and their surrounding. I also always want the viewer to make eye contact with the subject several times throughout a video.” – Isaac Varty of Isaac Varty Films

ScotandJules kept cool despite the pressure. They managed to get every BBM girl ready just in time to step into the shoot. No composure was lost even with my banter and pestering , “Have a glass of wine fellas, no big deal!”.

So all in all it went really well. The BBM girls were stunning in their shots; We’ve put out some merch and we’re prepped for future promotions. These girls are going to hit it big this week at Santa’s Kidz 2011 and look out for them hitting the stage throughout 2012 in various competitions and events!

Extra special thanks to Mile Zero Dance for the studio space.
