Brothers Grim x FLAVOR

June 6th, 2012 by Wade Tompkins

PG and Komrade from the Brothers Grim are throwing a BBQ party this weekend, June 10, 2012.  What’s the celebration? They’re releasing their music video ‘Love Thy Brother’ ft Trippz and directed by Jeff Eckert, and new merch designed by yours truly. It’s been great working these guys… it went a little something like this.

Flavor and Grim have been in touch for a while and it was only a matter of time until we collabed on some apparel. Komrade had seen some of our other work and was pretty stoked to work with us. Being a creative artist himself he knew from experience that creativity comes from freedom. “Look”, he said, “ I want it to have Future is Grim on one shirt and maybe another one to represent my neighbourhood. Other than that, you’ve got the reins”.  We love working under these conditions. It’s often harder, but the rewards are much higher.

You see, on one side you’ve got this broad spectrum of ideas to work with, but you also have to come up with them. It can be hard doing whatever you want but having little to jump off of. Not to mention, if you show up with something you think is real slick, there’s a chance the customer will hate it. That can be devastating.

Luckily for us, having done a few designs for the Brothers before, we had a good idea of what they wanted. We also know what their fans want; We’re from the city, we’ve hit up 118 ave and seen the Grim live. They told us about their trip out to Van for the 4 20 performances. I really dug the Metal To Rust vid, so we took all of that and got on some designs.

Usually we’d bump back and forth with collaborators until we finally hit the nail. This time though we hit it nearly at the start. Maybe we had more background info, or maybe we just got lucky. Hopefully though, we’re just gettin’ better! Hah!

Here’s the two designs that made it all the way through:

Cruisin’ in the E

June 4th, 2012 by Wade Tompkins

With summer finally here, the Flavor crew tend to jump on any excuse we can to get outside. Helping shoot a music video for JoThrillz was one such excuse and boy was it ever worth it.

We rolled up to a fancy west side neighbourhood a bit early so we had to kill some time. Ryder, always thinking ahead, had his longboard tucked in the back of his truck. I had never been on one before so I looked silly, but fuck it, I was having a good time.

Just as I was getting the hang of things, Thrillz shows up. In a porsche. Say what? I figured he pinched it from a dealership or What’s Next really took off! Orrrrr… as it turns out he borrowed it from a friend.

Jeff Eckert got there right after and we started filming. It’s interesting to see how things look in person compared to on cam. The way Jeff hits the angles and splices the shot takes a fun time and turns it into something that looks really amazing. The kid’s got skills, that’s for sure.

To get the porsche shot, we hooked the camera up to the back of our pickup and had Thrillz follow us around. Even smarter yet, we had a lead car go in front and clear traffic. Speaking of traffic, there was way more than we expected, but we got really lucky and didn’t break the caravan once. Slick.

Later on we switched the porsche out. We upgraded to a 1988 Chevy BucketofBolts. As we’re bouncing it around town we noticed a couple of lazy boys sitting on a front lawn with a “Free” sign. AWWW YEAH. Needless to say we managed to turn the truck into a 6 seater convertible. Most important, it made for some really wicked shots for the video.

By the end of the day we had just a few shots left. We were hungry and grumpy and it started to pour. Like the rest of the day though, we had a bit of luck and the rain held off long enough for us to finish up. We even got a slow mo of thrillz taking lemon soda to the nuts!

So without further adieu, here’s the vid!
